URL Alphabetizer
What is the URL Alphabetizer? It's a handy little utility that should easily be in every webmasters tool box. Simply put, it alphabetizes your link pages. No more messy link lists that have no rhyme or reason with the URL Alphabetizer on hand. Your link pages can easily be converted to alphabetical order and make you look like a sharp webmaster. Also alphabetizes text lists. The URL Alphabetizer does have limitations which I clearly outline below. Because this product is not one of my better selling products, development has ended, at least for now, so what it is, it is. You can get a free copy of URL Alphebetizer by buying any other other product or combination of products that equal or exceed $25.00. Once you place your order, just ask for "Free Alpha" in the Order Comments field of the order from when you order your other qualifying product(s).
If you choose to purchase it rather than receive for free, the regular price is $17.00.
Meanwhile, back on the ranch...
Here are the limitations and other details of the URL Alphabetizer:Syntax
Using the Alphabetizer is simple, but be aware that it is NOT a syntax checker. Syntax errors in HTML code may cause unpredictable results. Two examples of correct syntax for an HTML link are:
<a href="pagename.html">Some Internal Link</a>
<a href="http://www.pagename.html">Some External Link</a>
The actual HTML commands could be in upper case as well, I used lower case in these examples because I prefer it. If you experience incorrect alphabetizing, check your HTML codes with a syntax checker to find the mistakes.
File Sizes
The Alphabetizer is programmed to sort thousands of links at a time, however, the length of each file you alphabetize may be limited by your own computers memory resources. Otherwise, the actual file size limit is 32k. If you try to bring in a file larger than 32k the program will give you a message that the file is too large. 32k is an awful lot of links, that limit will not affect most users. I chose to limit file size to 32k for maximum program stability across a wide range of computer configurations.
If you are trying to sort an extremely long list and the program hangs or takes too long to sort, you need to either try smaller files or try closing all your other programs to free up memory.
File Types
HTML files refer to files with a .html and .htm extension. Text files refer to plain text files with a .txt extension. The program may open and sort other types of files, but only these were tested.
Multiple Lists
The Alphabetizer does not preserve multiple lists on one page. If you try to sort a list of links that are broken into different sections on a page and separated by a catagory heading or paragraph of text, it will not preserve the sectioning. It will sort them in alphabetical order, but move the links in alphabetical order to different sections according to how many links were in each section. For pages like this you need to copy and paste your links into separate pages and alphabetize them, then move the ordered links back to your original page in the category you desire.
How To Alphabetize
ALPHABETIZING LINKS IN HTML FILES
- Click the OPEN button and choose the html file with the links you want to alphabetize.
- When the page opens, click the SORT button.
- In the window that opens, choose the type of file to sort, html or text. Then choose whether to sort in ascending or descending order. Click the Start button.
- If your page contained no syntax errors, your links will now be alphabetized. Click the Save button and choose your save destination and name the file you just created. I recommend you save it to either a different location from the original file or choose a different name from the original so you have the original as a back-up file.
ALPHABETIZING TEXT LISTS
Sorting text works on a line by line basis. If you have a list to be sorted such as a list of names, each item should be on a separate line, otherwise it will sort them in alphabetical order by line rather than by name. For example, because each item is on a separate line, this list:
Green Bay Packers
San Francisco 49ers
Arizona Cardinals
...would be sorted as:
Arizona Cardinals
Green Bay Packers
San Francisco 49ers
While this list, with more than one name on each line:
Green Bay, San Francisco, Des Moines
Portland, Memphis, New Orleans
Denver, Salt Lake City, Tampa Bay
...would be sorted by line like this:
Denver, Salt Lake City, Tampa Bay
Green Bay, San Francisco, Des Moines
Portland, Memphis, New Orleans
Notice the cities are not alphabetized within each line, but the lines themselves are alphabetized according to the first letter of each line. This is how the text alphabetizing works.
To alphabetize text:
- Click the OPEN button and choose the text file you want to alphabetize.
- Click the SORT button.
- In the window that opens, choose the type of file to sort, html or text. Then choose whether to sort in ascending or descending order. Click the Start button.
- Your list will now be alphabetized. Click the Save button and choose your save destination and name the page. I recommend you save it to either a different location from the original file or choose a different name from the original, that way you have the original as a back-up file.
